Our November 2023 outing was to St. James Park, the home of Newcastle United.
To keep us entertained on the coach journey there, Barbara had organised a quiz guessing the names of UK football stadiums. Some of the questions had us scratching our heads, but it was good fun. On arrival, we enjoyed drinks and a pie and pea lunch in Shearer’s Bar which is situated on the perimeter of the stadium.
Following our lunch, we split into two groups and had a guided tour of the football stadium. Those who hadn’t been to St. James Park before, were in for a shock as there were an awful lot of stairs to climb. The escalator on the day we visited was out of order but fortunately for us, there were lifts which we were grateful for as part of the tour we were taken to one of the highest points in the stadium. From this point, you get a bird’s eye view of the pitch and a panoramic view of Newcastle. From the highest point, we were taken to the lowest point, the pitch side, walking down the tunnel under the ‘Howay the Lads’ sign. During the tour, we were taken to the Media Suite where some of our members were able to sit in the manager’s seat from where he gives his pre-match press conferences. This was a good photo opportunity for some.
It was a long day but enjoyable.
