To start the meeting although it’s rather early to discuss Christmas, Barbara announced she would take names for our Christmas meal at our October members’ meeting.
Malcolm Anderson one of our members who is a member of HERAM (Hull & East Riding Advanced Motorists) gave a presentation about this local independent charity. HERAM promotes greater road safety and is an official provider of the IAM Roadsmart Advanced Driver Courses to help make roads safer by being a better driver. This local charity is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Anniversary this year and, in recognition of this Allen, our Chair presented Malcolm with a cheque for £100 from the Senior Tigers Club.
Ex-Hull City player Jason Price was our guest speaker this month. He was, unfortunately, a few minutes late due to traffic problems so we took the opportunity to draw our raffle before he arrived. Malcolm Anderson made the draw. The raffle raised £316.50.
Jason was born in Wales and played for Wales under 21’s. Unfortunately, he never had the opportunity to play for his home country in the first team. He started playing football at age eight at school playing in goal. While playing as a goalkeeper, he kept breaking his arm, leading to his mother telling him to play anywhere but in goal. So, he started to play in mid-field.
Jason first signed as a professional footballer for Swansea where he played right-back but told us that he couldn’t defend for his life and that he could only go forward which made us laugh. He played seven seasons for Swansea and said he was upset when he left.
It was through ex-city player, Ben Burgess that he came to play for Hull City when Peter Taylor was the manager. It was also when Adam Pearson was the Chairman and the football club had already moved from Boothferry Park to the KCOM Stadium and was getting crowds of twenty thousand plus. Jason remembers his first home game against Darlington and he said coming out of the tunnel for the first time was amazing and he got to score on his debut at the stadium. He went on to play for the Tigers for three seasons between 2003/06.
Jason now lives in the Wakefield/Leeds area and is a gas & plumbing engineer. He told us how he took a plumbing course at Morcombe planning for life after football. He did say though that he loved his time living in Beverley while he was here playing for our beloved Hull City.
Pat thanked Jason for coming and said what a joy it had been listening to him talk about events in his football career. Pat also thanked Malcolm Anderson for his presentation.
It was another enjoyable afternoon with 163 members attending the meeting.
