After a very dull and dreary January, on Thursday January 18th, the clouds cleared and 57 of our members left the KCOM stadium for the South Bank.
Our first stop was the Hemswell Antiques’ Centre at Hemswell Cliff. We were there for morning coffee and a look round some of the exhibits. This, being the largest antique centre in Europe, it is impossible to see everything even in a day, so hopefully some will go back again.
We then went to The Dambusters Arms at Scampton. We were greeted by co-owners Steve and Greg for a buffet lunch, a chance to try their home-brewed ales and a talk about the Dambusters history.
The surprise of the day was a 2 hour display of the Red Arrows team training around the area. It was a bright clear day, and so viewing was extremely clear and lots of photos were taken.
We continued our journey to the International Bomber Command memorial at Canwick Hill Lincoln. Although the Visitors’ Centre will not be officially opened until next month, we were given a guided tour and talk about the memorial, which was a very moving experience.
We were joined by Chris, our Acklams driver, at all three destinations, and we had a safe enjoyable journey both ways.
